According to ISACA's 2022 "State of Cybersecurity" report 62% of cybersecurity teams are understaffed and 63% have unfilled vacancies. That same report listed soft skills as the top missing skill type for candidates with cloud computing skills being a close second.
With that said, I have some good news. I love cybersecurity and cloud computing. It has taken a large investment of time and energy, but I've made it to the top 1% of users on TryHackMe.com and I'm still pushing onward. I'm also studying for my Security+ certification and plan to take my exam in late May 2022. Recently I've started working through PortSwigger's Web Security Academy to improve my Burpsuite capabilities and it's been a great learning experience.
In terms of cloud computing I have a growing set of projects built using Amazon Web Services. I love the platform and how it easy (and cheap) it makes it to experiment with their tools. I've been getting my hands dirty with everything from simpler projects like hosting static websites to more complex things like creating CI/CD pipelines for web applications. It also provides a great opportunity to implement networking security practices that I'm learning about. The future is in the cloud and it's important to make sure that future is secure.
And finally my soft skills. In a previous career I spent nearly a decade as a sports performance coach. I got into the field thinking it was just making people bigger, faster, stronger, but my biggest takeaway was how important building interpersonal relationships are. While what I know is certainly important it's pretty useless if I can't convey it to others clearly and respectfully while also being receptive to their valuable input.
If your team falls into the understaffed percentile I mentioned earlier: I'm sorry to hear that, but hopefully I've at least piqued your interest and there's room for me to help. I'm permanently in "learning mode" and would love the opportunity to talk with you about what I know, what I'm learning, and my various related side projects that are always going on.
Grab my resume and let's talk!
